The big crisis and the Brazilian crisis: the catalyzing effect of Covid-19

Abstract

In this paper, we identify the role of Covid-19 pandemics in catalyzing preexisting crisis in Brazil. Namely, the chronic economic crisis, the acute economic crisis, the public health crisis, and the political crisis. We argue that the combination of these crisis shape the monumental social and institutional crisis observed in the country in 2020. Instead of denying the role of politics, we believe that politics is key to address the several existing crisis.

Carlos Melo, Insper

Cientista Político, mestre e doutor pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP), Carlos Melo é professor tempo integral do Insper desde 1999. É também analista político, com participação ativa em vários veículos de comunicação, palestrante e consultor de empresas nacionais e estrangeiras. Com sua análise conjuntural isenta e reflexão desapaixonada, tem buscado contribuir com o debate político, econômico e social do Brasil.É professor de Sociologia e Política (Graduação) e de Estratégia e Política (Mestrado), e do Curso de Relações Governamentais, todos no Insper. Coordenador da Trilha de Humanidade e membro do Conselho Acadêmico da Instituição. Como professor de Liderança Política, Multiculturalismo, História do Poder atua também em programas de Educação Executiva. Diversas vezes paraninfo ou homenageado por turmas de formandos, na graduação, inúmeras vezes foi finalista do Prêmio Chafi Haddad – melhor professor do ano –, conquistando-o em duas edições.
