The impact of cooperativism on the development of small municipalities

This study is about regional development promoted by cooperative system from the comparison between two small towns that have family agriculture activities. This model of agribusiness has large participation in brasilian economy, mainly in smaller municipalities, and the cooperativism helps expanding consumer markets and strenghthening small producers. Based on this subject, this study aims to understand what are the impacts that cooperatives generates to local and regional economic development between two small cities, one with and one without cooperative business. This research is a case study with qualitative approach and was held in the municipalities of Centenário/RS and Planalto Alegre/SC. It is classified as exploratory, with searches in databases, interviews and focus group. The data were analysed by applying the array of Conditioning, Potencialities and Disabilities – CPD. The results showed a high degree of participation and importance of cooperatives in the development of small towns by economic leverage promoted.
